Program Overview

The New York State Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP) will provide significant economic relief to help low and moderate-income households at risk of experiencing homelessness or housing instability by providing rental arrears, temporary rental assistance and utility arrears assistance.

The program, which opened on June 1, 2021, provides renters with 12 months of rental arrears, and potentially up to three additional months. Income limit for all programs is 80% of the area median income (AMI).

Renters in Nassau and Suffolk Counties can apply to NYS OTDA through their online application here.

Some additional notes:

  • Landlords and tenants can apply for assistance
  • Tenants may receive up to 12 months of utility arrears/assistance as well
  • There are no immigration status requirements
  • Landlords can self-attest to rental status (a lease is not required)
  • Tenants can self-attest their yearly income if paid in cash

Landlord Rental Assistance Program

This program will provide assistance to landlords whose tenant has left an apartment in New York State with unpaid rental arrears or the landlord has a tenant with rental arrears who is residing in an apartment in New York State who refuses to apply for ERAP.

To apply for either Program, Owners must register for an account and complete a W9 form.
