HWCLI serves Long Islanders by:

• Educating and enrolling families in food stamps and providing access to free and reduced cost school meals and summer meal programs. HWCLI connects Long Island’s families with resources to purchase fruits, vegetables, and other nutritious foods which might sometimes be more costly.

• Providing access to healthcare for children and adults by enrolling in the New York State Health Insurance Marketplace. Research has shown that families struggling to make ends meet often forgo cost-prohibitive health insurance and preventative care increasing the risk for sickness and trips to the emergency room.

• Convening and leading Long Island’s disaster planning and preparedness efforts.

• Connecting seniors, the uninsured, and others in need of advocacy navigate the complex healthcare system through the Community Health Advocate Program. From Medicare options to finding a provider to responding to medical bills and insurance errors, HWCLI provides access to regular sources of affordable and appropriate care.

• Providing outreach and education on the Earned Income Tax Credit and free tax preparation through VITA sites. The struggling working class and families living in poverty are more likely to be taken advantage of by unscrupulous financial services. HWCLI educates and provides outreach for free services that allow families to increase their economic stability.
